Week 2 - Mind over Matter

It’s amazing what a simple commitment like this has done for my willpower. I went cold turkey from blithering, sugar eating, transfat consuming slob to clean eating over night. Kian’s birthday party last night was a cake and ice-cream fest…yeah, I was hungry. Yeah, when I came home I had just fasted for 24 hours and the first thing I saw was this green frosting covered Lizard shaped cake just waiting for me to plant my face in the middle of it. But while I was slightly, ever so slight tempted I was ok. I made one of my favorite treats, a peanut butter and applesauce sandwich on high-fiber bread (try it some time, I swear applesauce is so much better than jam/jelly) and munched on that instead.

That night, Heather was pouring a bowl of yummy sugar cereal, and I was craving an orange. It was so strange, but once you detox yourself from all that nasty sugar, the natural things can be so pleasant and rewarding. It was great.

I had an all out kick-bottom workout week. Monday flag football for 1 hour, Tuesday morning weights ½ hour, Tuesday night hoops 2 hours (and I played well after a year hiatus), Thursday morning weights ½ hour, Friday morning ½ hour cardio. It was very, very enjoyable. One big reason for the improvement was the recruiting of a new lifting partner from the ward ranks (my 5th partner in three years – I just burn through them I guess, or it must be my morning breath). This partner was already consistently coming on his own, and he is not a free weights guru so I’m teaching him a free weights program and he's providing me motivation. It's working well so far.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell you. I Weighed in at 207, so I’m down three pounds and feeling good about the progress two weeks into all of this. This week shouldn’t be bad, but next week I’m in Paris and the Czech Republic. Traveling is always difficult, but I’m feeling pretty confident going in. I’ll just stock up on the protein/health bars and learn how to say “hold the fat and sugar” in French. Until the next week, adieu.

When you say big, do you mean big as in fat? I'm not sure i'm down with that.

Great job Spence. It is a tough thing to do. I am starting my third week of WW and daily workouts. I'm down 8.2 pounds so far. You are inspiring me. Keep up the good work.

Does your 90 Days of Discipline actually require you to post an entry? :-)
